MATCH REPORT

SATURDAY 29th SEPTEMBER 2007

Melton 58 Loughborough 9

Melton got of to a winning start in their Merit Table with an outstanding win against Loughborough. An all round team performance gave them victory. Forwards and backs combined well. The youngsters in the team Cox, Hayes, O Brien and Duncan fitted in well while the older heads Spence, Hobill and Wolley provided the stability and guidance. Melton took the lead with a classic forward drive which lead to a touchdown by Misuida. This set the tone for the game. Tries came regularly and Meltons defence completely shut out the opposition.

Melton led 22-9 at half time with tries by O Brien,Martarano, and Hobill and Cox adding a conversion.

Early in the second half Wolley got a try from his new position of flanker, while man of the match Duncan was having his wounds dealt with. Chandler replaced Wolley and it was good to see him back to form after injury getting a brace of tries on his return. A further try by Clemmons and a somewhat lucky penalty try along with 3 more conversions from Cox completed the scoring, giving Melton a comprehensive win.

TEAM Webb, Prior, Brookes, Yates, Martarano, Duncan, Misuida, Spence, H Clemmons, Cox, O Brien, Hobill, Wolley, Underwood, Hayes, Chandler, S Clemmons

MATCH REPORT

SATURDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2007

MELTON RFC SECONDS 74 OLD NEWTONIANS SECONDS 14

The seconds kicked off a new season with a comfortable win over an Old Newts bare 15.

Straight from the whistle Melton dominated both in the forwards and backs and the opening score came from a well organised backline move seeing fullback Ben Warwick glide over the try line with Hayes converting. The forwards dominated in all aspects, allowing further tries from Hayes and Underwood, with a newly-formed front row of Brooks, Webb and Meakin proving too strong for the visitors.

Good work in the line-outs from Adam Chambers allowed quick ball for the Melton back-line. New recruits Nathan and Lucas Roy-Smith proved too good for the visitors, scoring a hat-trick between them.

With the referee unable to finish the first half through injury, special thanks to Mark Aley for stepping in.

As Melton started the second half 30 points ahead, the back line of Roy-Smith, Stapleford, Hayes, Underwood, Batchelor and Warwick continued to pick holes in the opposition's defence, allowing further tries from Chambers (2), Meakin and Warwick. However, in the last 10 minutes, Old Newts replied with two converted tries.

Team: W. Brooks, A. Chambers, D. Meakin, M. Brooks, Nathan, N. Roy-Smith, A. Chambers, W. Greaves (c), S. O'Brian, L. Roy-Smith, J. Stapleford, M. Haynes, A. Underwood, B. Batchelor, B. Warwick, T. Kempin.

Market Bosworth 25 November 2006

Match Report

25th November 2006

MELTON RFC 24 MARKET BOSWORTH 17

MELTON, refreshed from their enforced lay-off, took on a mobile Bosworth side and in a pulsating match which was always in the  balance, came away with a deserved win.
Rather disappointingly the visitors arrived unable to scrummage because of no experienced hooker which immediately put Melton’s front row of Dave Meakin, Alan Wade and Dave Simons on the back foot. They refused any offers of help from the home side and of course scrums were uncontested so obviously the visitors moved the ball wide at every opportunity.
Melton opened the scoring from the kick-of after a forward-orientated driving maul from which Adam Lambert gleefully scampered his way over and ace kicker Sam Clemons added the  conversion for a 7-0 lead.
The visitors used the wind and slope to good effect and despite some outstanding last-ditch defence from Ben Shouler, Dan Belcher and Mark Aley, Bosworth were bound to score, firstly from a converted try, followed swiftly by a penalty, and finally a penalty try which was rather harshly awarded for a high tackle as the carrier was falling over.
Surviving with only a 17-7 reversal at the break, Melton’s tactics were simple – kick the ball with the trusty boots of Clemons, Aley and scrum-half Andy Stockdale into the corners, keep it high in the forwards and crash the ball close in the centres. They carried out this plan to a man and were rewarded with two excellent tries and several near misses.
The first try came courtesy of a catch and drive from a line-out and man-of-the-match Roger Uttley plundered the touchdown, Clemons adding the conversion.
Wayne Brookes took some excellent lines of running, Paul Eggleston galloped on to the ball and Paul Moore was outstanding in the loose, all being involved after Alan Wade stole the ball at a ruck from a bewildered young Bosworth player. Dave Meakin rounded off the turnover with a try from close range and the unflappable Clemons made it three from three and a 21-17 advantage.
In the last 10 minutes a spirited Bosworth side ran everything but Melton held firm and sealed the victory with an Aley penalty after a thumping tackle from a fit again Adam Underwood.
