Super 8's Tournament at Welford Road

A squad from Melton Under 10’s were invited to play in a Super 8’s Tournament at Leicester Tigers, before the England Saxon’s match against Ireland at Welford Road last week.

Melton’s first opponents on the night were Leicester Lions.  Starting very strongly with a great try from Matt Robinson.  Melton’s line out was working really well and this gave the whole side a great platform to put a phase of play together where Toby Hutchinson drove his way over for the second try of the match.

Melton rounded off there first match with a third score from Eddie Hobil after a good team effort to give them a 15 – 0 victory.

The second match was a slightly tougher affair against Hinckley where Melton had to scrap for every ball.  There was great tackling by Harvey Green and Tom Folwell which helped keep the score level.  Melton had a great break by Arragon Walker running half of the length of the pitch before a great tackle put him into touch.  This match ended a well deserved 0 – 0 draw.

For the last match Melton needed a win or draw to get through to the final, but after a two match break with snow and biting winds they squared up to Lutterworth and gave a fantastic performance, only to lose the match in the final 30 seconds 0 – 5.

After the Tournament, the team were then able to sit back and watch England Saxons beat Ireland A, 31 – 13. The whole evening was a fantastic experience for the squad actually playing on the hallowed turf  of Welford Road.  Well done everybody !

 Melton U10’s - 15 Sleaford RFC - 0

Melton played a controlled game against Sleaford in the first match and won by 3 tries to no reply. Melton kept the game plan simple, keeping good shape and fast closing down of their opponents. Melton drove well in the scrum with quick ball from scrum half D.Copley releasing the backs. The Melton centres worked on the long pass to the wings but the Sleaford defence read the play well. All three Melton tries came from centres J.Postle, B.Heaver and H.Tuckwood weaving their magic through the middle of the pitch. Forwards O.Tebbatt and W.McGuigan linked well during the game and gained Melton vital territory and kept possession for the home team.

Melton put out a very experienced side against a very strong Derby team,  playing  in very windy conditions.

The first half with the wind behind them Derby had most of the possession and forced Melton onto the back foot. Melton held the ball up on several occasions when Derby looked favourites to score. Within feet of the try line scrum half L.Harrold dived over the try line in the corner to give Melton the lead.

The second half was the opposite to the first half with Melton having all the play and Derby defending in numbers. Some excellent rugby was played by both teams with some determined rucking and driving. Melton travelled to Coalville RFC on Sunday in perfect match conditions to play a game against the hosts and also South Leicester RFC.

Coalville RFC U10’s  5  -  10  Melton RFC U10’s

Melton started the match very positively setting up early rucks with scrum half L.Harrold passing the ball out wide quickly to get the backs into action. The Melton scrum was strong and powerful and always in command throughout the match. Captain H.Legg opened the scoring after wriggling free on the halfway line and sprinting to the line for the opening try. Coalville respond quickly running forward after winning a lineout ball but Melton stood strong to the challenge and gave nothing away before half time.

Melton travelled to Nottingham RFC on Sunday to play a game against the hosts and also West Bridgeford RFC.

Nottingham RFC  20  -  0  Melton U10’s

Melton started the match very positively passing the ball around well, but soon found out Nottingham’s very well organised team were going to be a challenge. Melton just couldn’t break the Nottingham line and heads started to drop before Nottingham scored a well worked try to lead at half time.

The second half Nottingham were just too powerful for the tiring visitors and went on to score three tries to no reply.

Market Harborough

Melton hosted the county champions Market Harborough on Sunday and shared the honours with a win for each team.

Melton U10’s  10 – 5  Mk Harborough

The Melton team was in top form in this match with everyone playing his  role to win the game. L Harrold was outstanding at scrum half putting in a faultless display and linking well with centres J Postle and H Legg.

Melton’s first try came after a great run by J Postle followed by a ruck and drive by H Legg and finally W McGuigan powering over the line to score.

The second half followed a similar pattern as the first with Melton’s rucking skills securing the ball and releasing the centres. It was all very tight but an M Harborough player evaded two missed tackles and scored the equaliser.

With time ticking by Melton attacked in numbers driving forward and reworking the ball until H Legg saw the gap to win the game for Melton at the final whistle.

Ashby  0  -  20  Melton U10’s

Melton travelled the long distance to Ashby on Sunday to play a team on a narrow and water logged pitch.

The Melton tactics was to keep the play down the middle and centres J Postle and Harry Legg controlled the game. The Melton forwards protected the ball at every ruck and Melton kept possession with W McGuigan scoring after 5 phases of play.

Melton’s player of the match Harry Legg scored a hatrick of tries being his reward for some outstanding rugby.

Ashby  5  -  10  Melton U10’s

The second match  between the two sides was a much closer game and credit to Ashby for putting up a real fight.

Oadby Wyggs  0 – 10  Melton RFC

Hinckley  0 – 20  Melton RFC

The second match against Hinckley was a master class of pace and power from the Melton team. Whenever Hinckley had procession of the ball they were tackled with force and venom.

When Melton had the ball it was passed to the runners in the team who ran in 4 tries. Winger A Bown-Bhandal scored two and centres J Postle and B Heaver one apiece.

Belgrave  0  - 15  Melton RFC

The well organised Melton team won the 3rd match of the day with very little problems. Two tries scored by wingers A Bown-Bhandal and L Harrold set up the win and forward W McGuigan driving over from a won lineout ball to seal it.

Leicester Lions  0  - 0  Melton RFC

Melton only needed the draw to take them through to the Tigers Ground and got just what they wanted. They faced a very powerful Lions team but matched them man for man in a very physical battle.

Melton’s captain H Legg stopped every Lion’s runner through the centre of the pitch with text book tackling. J Bancroft, C Whitehead and O Tebbatt were involved in every ruck, maul and scrum with commitment and passion. The Melton backs tried in vain to use there pace but despite strong runs the Lion’s defence held strong.

SOUTH LEICESTER R.F.C. TOURNAMENT

The Melton  U10’s took a very strong squad of players over to the South Leics tournament on Sunday and can consider themselves very unlucky to come away empty handed. The lads put in some fine displays and only conceded 2 tries in 4 matches but lacked a bit of lady luck on the day.

The first match Melton beat Loughbourgh 10 – 0 in a very physical match. Melton scored a try in each half and was always in control of the match despite some aggressive high tackles from the Loughbourgh team.

The second match Melton lost by a single try  to hosts South Leics in a very evenly matched game.

The third game and possibly the match of the tournament Melton drew 5-5 with the eventual champions Stratford R.F.C.

Stratford took an early lead after some fine handling skills but Melton’s Alex Bown –Bhandal scored the equaliser with a fine individual try weaving past at least 5 players and running half the pitch to score.

The second half was as fast and furious as the first with both teams matching each other in all areas of the pitch, tackling with passion but cancelling each other out.

The referee blew his whistle to the applause of all watching a great game of rugby for this age group.

The final match Melton beat Cosby 25 – 0 in a one sided game with Liam Harrold in fine form running in 3 tries from the wing.
