Melbourne RFC   5 - 21 Melton RFC Under 11’s

This was the first match in a triangular with Melbourne RFC and Kesteven RFC played on a sunny Sunday morning on a fantastic pitch.

Melton took control of this match from the beginning playing almost the whole of the first half on the attack. Ollie Tebbatt Melton’s best player of the game scored two first half tries, using his power and technique to drive over the try line.

Melbourne came back into the game in the second half and scored a try after some good territorial pressure. Melton always seemed to have something in reserve and scored late on through prop Joe Bancroft. George Boddy kicked all Melton’s conversions successfully.

Kesteven RFC   7  -  7  Melton RFC Under 11’s

Kesteven had probably the biggest pack of players this Melton side has ever played but stood up to the test with merit. The first half was very tight with some committed tackles from both teams. Kesteven  rucked very well and moved forward as a unit in several phases of play keeping possession of the ball. They were finally  rewarded with a try after breaking the solid Melton defence. Despite missing the conversion the referee allowed a retake that they scored.

The Melton players a little incensed by some of the first half decisions against them decided to show what they can do. The forwards worked hard at gaining ground then the backs were released and passed the ball from one side of the pitch to the other while still going forward before switching direction and passed the ball back across the pitch for Joe Postle to finish of diving over the try line. This was a complete team try and one of the best of the season. George Boddy scored the conversion to level the game. Melton went close to winning the match after some deep runs by Harry Legg in top form but had to settle for the draw a fair result.

Team: : L.Adams, J.Bancroft, M.Beesley, A.Bown-Bhandal,G.Boddy, M.Greedy, M.Grice, B.Heaver, D.Copley, H.Legg, J.Postle, G.Postle O. Tebbatt, H.Tuckwood, A.Twidale, C.Whitehead.

Melton Under 11’s Plate Winners

The Melton Under 11’s played in a rugby tournament on Sunday at Holt RFC in North Norfolk winning the Plate Final against a Luton team concluding a fantastic weekend tour.

Basingstoke  14 – 0  Melton RFC

The first match of the tournament the Melton team were still recovering from the disco the night before. Full credit to the team from Basingstoke RFC who played some fantastic forward rugby putting Melton under pressure the whole game. They were worthy winners with two well taken tries and conversions.

Melton RFC  35 – 0  West Bridgeford

After some harsh words from the Melton coaching team the lads started to play running rugby. Melton controlled this match from the start and scored a bonus point after scoring 5 tries to no reply. G Boddy converted all 5 tries.

Holt RFC  0 – 7  Melton RFC

Melton needed to beat the hosts and last years tournament champions Holt RFC to make the Plate Final. Playing against some really big Norfolk lads the Melton team were totally unfazed. The Melton forwards kept the ball tight and the backs moved the ball at pace with some direct runs putting Holt under pressure.

Melton didn’t panic despite needing the win just concentrated on keeping the ball and working in phases driving Holt backwards. Then after a breakaway from the Melton centres the Melton Captain O. Tebbatt drove the final 2 meters over the try line. A. Bown-Bhandal kicked the conversion.

The Under 11’s  Plate Final

Stockwood Park RFC  0 – 38  Melton RFC

The Melton team were full of confidence and played the best rugby of the season in this final mesmerizing the team from Luton. Melton’s player of the tournament Joseph Postle linked all the moves in the backs creating some fantastic attacking play. There was no stopping the Melton team who were in a rampant mood delighting the parents who travelled the 90 miles to see the lads play and were rewarded with a complete team performance to earn another trophy.

LOUGHBOROUGH  RUGBY  TOURNAMENT

Sunday 9th March 2008

Under 11’s WINNERS M.M.R.F.C

FANTASTIC FIVE (Five years tournament champions)

The Melton Under 11’s travelled to Loughborough on Sunday to defend a tournament they’ve won at every age group in previous years. This year was no exception with the current County Champions adding their 5th Loughborough title to the record books.

The first match of the day Melton played Mrk Bosworth who started the match in a very fast attacking fashion. Melton was chasing shadows as Mrk Bosworth passed the ball around using every back player in wave after wave of attacks. Mrk Bosworth lead at half time by a single try after a multiply of errors by Melton gifted the try to the better playing team.

Changes were made to the Melton team and a change in attitude of the players produced a fantastic half of rugby with Captain Ollie Tebbatt scoring a try after several phases of play. The game ended in a draw but the Melton players were starting to gel as a team,

The second match was against hosts Loughborough and this time Melton were the sharpest team with excellent support from all the forwards releasing backs G.Postle and A.Bown-Bhandal to score a try apiece to lead at half time 10-0.

Loughborough showed a lot of passion in the second half and pulled a try back after some really hard work by their forwards but Melton held on.

The third match Melton were playing to their full potential with the forwards winning lineout and scrums and securing the ball for the backs. Fast moving ball from the scrum half L. Harrold and fly half J.Postle released the skilful  A. Bown Bhandal to score his 2nd try of the day. The last play of the match forward H. Tuckwood drove over the try line with power to defeat Bosworth in style.

The final game of the day Loughborough needed to beat the Melton team by 3 clear tries to win the tournament but Melton had other ideas. The forwards kept the ball tight in the first half frustrating the Loughborough players. After a lineout win O. Tebbatt spun away from a maul and powered over the try line for Melton to lead at half time.

Loughborough kicked a lot of ball in the second period putting Melton on the back foot and applied constant pressure. Then a piece of scrum half genius as L. Harrold took the ball out of a ruck ran forward dummying a pass and ran ¾ of the pitch to score the winner to the delight of the Melton supporters who turned out in great numbers.

Player of the tournament was Liam Harrold.

Melton Squad: L. Adams, J. Bancroft, G. Boddy, M. Beesley, A. Bown- Bhandal, D. Copley, G. Croxall, M. Grice, L. Harrold, O. Heaney, B Heaver, G. Postle, J. Postle, A. Sarson, H. Tuckwood, O. Tebbatt

Away to Hinckley

Hinckley – 24  Melton U 11’s 8

Melton started this match in a very positive attacking manner. Good rucking from the forwards released the backs that passed the ball out to the wingers. However the very narrow pitch left little space for the backs to find any room to break the solid Hinckley defence.

Hinckley scored the first try with a breakaway run through the centre of the pitch from deep inside there own half.

Melton’s flyhalf Joe Postle intercepted a Hinckley pass and left everyone flatfooted as he ran with pace to the try line to level the scores.

The second half was very close but Hinckley was to strong with some powerful players driving forward in numbers and creating 2 more tries.

Melton’s player of the match was Ben Heaver for his tireless tackling.

Hinckley – 8  Melton U 11’s 8

The second match of the morning between the two sides was a much closer contest with Melton taking the lead through Captain Ollie Tebbat on the stroke of half time. Unfortunately the captain was injured scoring and limped out of the game.

Hinckley levelled the game early on in the second half and the game remained evenly balanced until the final whistle. Luke Adams and Max Beesley worked hard to drive Melton forward but Hinckley held their line well.

Melton’s player of the day was Max Beesley playing at Hooker for the first time and showing future potential in this position.

Nottingham R.F.C.   0  –  26   Melton R.F.C. U11’s

The first game against Nottingham was a very comfortable win for Melton due to strong forward play fast running backs. The work horse O.Tebbatt scored Melton’s first try in the first half but H.Legg missed the conversion.

The second half started as the fist finished with Melton in control with new comer M.Beesley getting involved in every ruck. Forward M.Grice powered over from 3 metres for Melton’s second before A.Sarson ran in two wonderful tries sprinting half the length of the pitch for one. O. Duley kicked all 3 conversions.

Nottingham R.F.C.   7  –  0  Melton R.F.C. U11’s

The second match of the day Nottingham brought in some fresh players with more experience and ability.

It was a very tight game and was always going to be low scoring, with Melton putting Nottingham under pressure in the first half but unable to score.

The second half belonged to Nottingham with Melton being consistently penalised for there style of play. The players accepted all the decisions from the Referee, retreated and played on in the spirit of the game.

Nottingham finally broke the deadlock after some fine forward play set up the backs to release their speedy winger to score the only try of the game.

Melton A  0 Market Harborough A 21

Melton B  7 Market Harborough B  14

For the first time this season Melton put out 2 teams to face Market Harborough who are blessed with one of the biggest squads in the County.

The B team played first, captained by Tuckwood,  who with his forwards led by example, and gave the backs good ball through scrum half Copley. Unfortunately, the backs were closed down and not able to convert the possession into try scoring chances. From 2 defensive line-outs full-back Legg was able to clear Melton lines with controlled kicks. Harbourgh scored in the first half from a powerful Harborough back row move. But this was soon followed by Melton’s try set up by Tebbatt’s 15 metre drive to just short of the line, supported by Boddy and Tuckwood who picked and drove over. The second half Melton succumbed to another Harborough back row move which was not closed down.

The A team then took the field with some changes in the backs but with  only one change in the pack. Harborough A, save for 1 or 2 players, were a fresh team. Melton held their own against some strong running by Harborough in the centre and on the left wing. The forwards gave their all. But by the second half the heavy conditions under foot were taking their toll on Melton’s stamina. Under constant pressure they conceded 3 quick tries when defending down hill on a sloping pitch.

Team: G. Boddy, M. Beesley, D. Copley, O. Duley, G. Croxall, L. Harrold, G. Postle, J. Postle, O. Tebbatt, H. Tuckwood, O. Heaney, M. Leah, M. Grice, M. Greedy, A. Twidale, B. Heaver, H. Legg, C. Whitehead.

The first half was all about keeping possession of the ball and the forwards and backs linked up very well through scrum half L.Harrold and fly half J. Postle. Melton scored 4 tries in the first half all coming  from the forwards, Grice (2), Tuckwood and Tebbatt with no reply from Leics Forest.

Changes were made at half time but Melton still kept the upper hand with backs L.Adams, G.Croxall and A.Bown –Bhandal all scoring tries after some excellent team work.

All 7 tries were converted successfully from various players to record a convincing away win.

Belgrave 7  –  Melton 14

The more organised Melton took the lead after a fine drive by M. Grice was halted just short of the try line but quick ball to the backs sent A. Sarson over to score. The back to form H. Legg then scored Melton’s second try after some good team work. H. Legg kicked both conversions with success.

Belgrave worked hard in the second half and put Melton under pressure and were finally rewarded with a try and conversion but Melton held on for the win.

The match was stopped at 11am for 2 minutes silence for Remembrance Day so all players and supporters could show their respect.

Melton 14 – Hinckley 21

Melton hosted a very strong Hinckley team on Sunday, resulting in a very even game.  Melton piled on the pressure early on but couldn’t cross the try line despite having plenty of possession.

It was Hinckley who took the lead before half time with strong drives down the centre of the pitch with Tuilagi at the front of each drive.

Melton’s forward H Tuckwood levelled the game with A Bown-Bhandal kicking the conversion.  A see saw game saw Hinckley take the lead yet again but a quick penalty kick and run by Bown-Bhandal opened the Hinckley defence and with support play by L Harrold diving over the try line.

In the last quarter Hinckley scored a converted try and defended well to earn a deserved win.

Stuarts & Lloyds RFC  7 – 35  Melton RFC

The first match of the day was against Stuarts & Lloyds and Melton soon took control of the game with their powerful front row of forwards. Tebbatt and Whitehead did the driving forward and Grice, Adams and Twidale supported and secured the ball at the breakdown.

Experienced backs Heaver and Bown-Bhandal scored a try a piece and forwards Tebbatt and Tuckwood added 3 more tries to Melton.

Oliver Duley converted all 5 Melton tries with his talented boot. Stuarts & Lloyds worked hard and were rewarded with a try and was converted by their captain.

Oakham RFC  7 – 28  Melton RFC

Oakham and Melton are the current joint County Champions so this was always going to be a big important fixture.

Melton staked their claim on the match in the first 5 minutes with total dominant forward play. Tuckwood and Tebbatt are becoming a class act with the rest of the pack supporting their play. Boddy in the second row scored Melton’s try after several phases of play with Melton keeping possession of the ball at every breakdown.

The backs kept their shape and J. Postle at fly half moved the ball wide at every opportunity.

SOUTH LEICESTER R.F.C RUGBY TOURNAMENT

Sunday 21st October 2007

Melton Under 11’s reached their 1st final of the season on Sunday but had to settle for the runners/up medals after an epic final against Stratford RFC. Melton reached the final coming top of the table after playing 5 teams in the group stage.

Melton 0 – 0 Stratford

This was a very even match both teams very well organised and cancelling each other out of the game. The early play was by Stratford but Melton ended the game on top after some powerful forward work. Luke Adams went over the try line but was held up.

Melton 5 – 0 Loughborough

Loughborough put out a strong team and competed well against Melton but couldn’t break the game line. Melton powerhouse Harry Tuckwood scored the winning try after several phases of play.

Melton 15 – 0 Stewarts & Lloyds

Melton upped their work rate and showed some class in this match. Stewarts players were being sucked into the mauls and Melton exposed the gaps created. Matt Grice scored his first try of the season an tries by the captain Alex  Bown-Bhandal and Harry Tuckwood secured a comfortable win.

Melton 20 – 0  South Leicester

The hosts of the tournament played Melton at their peak. 3 first half tries from forwards Tuckwood ,Tebbatt and the energetic Bown-Bhandal put Melton in the driving seat. South Leicester played with spirit in the second half and improved their defence. Ben Heaver jinxed his way to score an excellent try.

Melton 0 -0 Wellingborough

Wellingborough needed to beat Melton to reach the final and threw everything at Melton throughout the game to no avail. Melton stood man to man against a very strong and powerful team and matched them in all areas.

The Final   Melton 0 – 5 Stratford

Melton reached the final topping the table and played second place Stratford. It was a very even match with Melton the best team in the first half. Stratford needing the win as Melton had the best count back score  drove forward in waves of attacks. Melton held out but for some reason the referee found 5 minutes extra time for Stratford to score the winning try before blowing the final whistle. It was the first try Melton had conceded in 6 games but cost them the tournament.
At the presentations the South Leicester RFC Chairman said “ The final between Melton and Stratford was the best quality of rugby he’d ever seen at this age group”.

Kesteven Festival

Melton under 11’s started the new season by playing in the annual Kesteven Rugby Festival. In perfect conditions and a very well organised tournament some fantastic rugby was played from all teams in this age group.

Melton lost the first match by a single try to the eventual tournament winners Oakham. This tough game was always controlled by the Oakham forwards setting the platform for the backs to move the ball around.

Melton defended with passion and made Oakham work hard for the win.

In the second match against Sleaford Melton went a try down early on but this stirred the hornets nest and Melton replied with 3 tries and showed some class. Melton forwards Tuckwood and Tebbatt worked really hard forcing the way through the Sleaford defence creating the chances.

Next up was Newark another very good side and despite Melton scoring first and controlling the game the threat was always there. In the second half several missed tackles allowed a rampaging run from a huge Newark player to level the game.

The final match against Market Rason started very scrappy with the ball being tied up in mauls with the backs being left frustrated. Changes were made to the team and Melton played the best rugby of the day in the second period. The scrum was in full control and quick ball to the stand off who released the centres created good running rugby. Melton got the try they deserved and won the match.

MATCH REPORT

26th NOVEMBER 2006

Melton 15 Market Harborough 14

Melton shared the honours in two games against a very strong and well organised team from Market Harborough.

The visitors exerted pressure from the start and pinned Melton back in their own half. There was some first class defending from the home side but just before the break Harborough charged down a clearance and scored the first try. In the second period  Melton came out strongly and began to take control through good work by the forwards in the scrum and the line out. With full time approaching Melton kicked the ball deep into the opposition half and won a penalty. From here they ran in to level the match. Tireness then took its toll as the visitors rattled in two well worked tries in as many minutes to post a somewhat flattering 21-7 victory.

Melton signalled their intent early in the second match with a try almost straight from the kick off. Market Harborough came back but Melton defended well and broke for a second try midway through the half. The visitors kicked off from the restart and again Melton drove forward to score a third. By now the wind had risen and none of the Melton tries were converted but they took a healthy 15-0 lead into the break. The opposition made wholesale changes at half time and scored two tries in the second period but the match ended in a 15-14 victory for Melton.

Squad: E Hatcher, B Sayers,  H Stapleton, N Harrison, M Boyd, J Taylor,  J Rudkin, J Parker, J Leah, R Hardisty, C Dickinson, M McNally O’Reilly, C Hefford, R Jowett, S Hall, J Haywood, W Giles, T Millicheap, G Kaczmarczyk, G Mallender, Aaron.

HOME to Leicester Forest and Keyworth

Melton under 11’s played two matches at home against Leicester Forest East and Keyworth.

Melton scored straight from the kick off in the first match to take a 5-0 lead and held the majority of early possession. The visitors then came back strongly but the hosts retained the lead to the half time break. After the interval the home side threatened again, working the ball well along the backs but the opposition defence held firm. The remainder of the match was fairly physical but eventually the Melton pressure lead to another try to end with a 12-0 victory.

Melton were caught out almost immediately in the next match against Keyworth and were soon 14-0 behind. Keyworth’s strong running led to further tries to stretch the lead to 26-0 just after half time. However the home side refused to give up and ran in two quick responses to take the score to 26-14. They continued to pressure in the latter stages but time ran out

AWAY to Mansfield and Rotherham

Mansfield 5  Melton 0

The under 11’s continued their fine form in a double header away to Mansfield and Rotherham.

The first match against Mansfield was a bruising encounter with neither side giving an inch in the early encounters. Melton gradually began to dominate the game but, despite a number of good opportunities, were unable to make it count before the half time break. The visitors continued to enjoy the vast majority of the possession in the second period and a score seemed almost inevitable. However, during a rare foray into the opposition half, Mansfield stole a try in the corner. Melton responded with a number of surging runs but in the end were unlucky to lose 5 – 0.

Rotherham 0 Melton 21

Melton refused to intimidated by a physically large Rotherham side for the second match and were soon 7 – 0 ahead. In the second period Melton continued to exert pressure and forced the opposition into a stream of errors. From the resultant penalty the ball was well worked along the back line for a second try which was duly converted to extend the lead to 14 – 0. By now Melton were in full control and rounded the game off with a fine solo effort from the fly half who picked the ball up from a scrum on the halfway line and ran in the third score to take the match to 21 – 0

Squad: E Hatcher, B Sayers,  H Stapleton, N Harrison, M Boyd, J Taylor, G Hall,  J Rudkin, J Parker, J Leah, R Hardisty, C Dickinson, M McNally O’Reilly, C Hefford, R Jowett, S Hall.

MATCH REPORT

22nd OCTOBER 2006

The under 11’s won both of their matches against Oadby Wiggs in convincing fashion – 40 : 7 and 14 : 0  respectively.

MELTON 40   OADBY WYGGS 7

In the initial encounter Melton won the early exchanges and were soon seven points ahead but the visitors came back quickly to equalise. The home forwards dominated play for the remainder of the first period but at half time the score remained locked at 7:7.  The pressure play continued at the start of the second period and Oadby Wiggs were soon on the back foot, conceding a penalty which allowed Melton to run in their second try.  Shortly after, a dominant scrum won the ball against an Oadby put in and set up another close range score to extend the lead. From a penalty on halfway the confident boot of the fly half found touch near the opposition line and, having secured the line out, both props combined to take the score to 28 : 7. By now Melton were rampant and ran in a further two scores to take the overall haul to six tries with five conversions.

MELTON 14   OADBY WYGGS 0

Melton made some personnel changes and started the second match looking to move the ball around a bit more. The visitors remained resilient but the breakthrough came midway through the first half and was duly converted to take a 7 : 0 lead. Close to half time Melton crossed the line again but, unfortunately, the ball was held up.

The home team were now more fluid and opened the game up with good running and passing. Their dominance was now such that, although not registering on the scoreboard, they crossed the line three more times before eventually delivering the killer blow. An excellent combination of forwards winning a scrum against the head and passing along the backline led to the final try which wrapped the match up at 14: 0

MATCH REPORT

1st OCTOBER 2006

Kesteven Festival

The under 11’s took part in the Kesteven festival on Sunday.

In their first match against Sleaford the forwards made an excellent start, dominating their opponents in both the scrum and the line out. Close to half time Melton drove over the line but, sadly, the referee was not in a position to award the try. The pack continued to drive forward during the second half but were unable to link effectively with the backs in the face of resolute defending from Sleaford. Unfortunately, as Melton pressed for victory Sleaford scored against the run of play.

The second match against Nottingham2 saw Melton play a more open game, scoring an early try after a searching kick tested the opposition defence. A surging maul midway through the second period gave Melton another score to secure victory.

The final group opponents were Newark who were unbeaten up to that point. Melton matched them for a long period before going down to a couple of well run tries.

Melton could still have finished second depending on the result of the final pool match between Sleaford and Nottingham. However the outcome remained undetermined as torrential rain swept across the ground and the tournament was abandoned.
