After lots of stressful organising, the Melton RFC under 17’s team went on a long weekend tour of Scotland. Staying in the jockey’s quarters of Hamilton Race Course, we had a great weekend away, playing in a tournament and a game. After arriving Friday night very late and getting an average of 3 hours sleep, we turned up to the Dalziel Festival of Youth Rugby not feeling on top form. However, we adapted well to the situation and finished 5th overall in one of the biggest under 18’s tournaments in Scotland. In the opinion of many coaches and players, Melton’s Jonny Watts was the man-of-the-tournament. That night saw some interesting events, which included lots of beer, cling film and fish paste. Celebrating the tournament in style, we socialised with the lads form other competing teams in Dalziel’s very nice country club before moving on to further establishments. Day 2 saw us playing the full Dalziel under 18’s team (who also happened to be the Scottish champions and had 5 Scottish international players) on a pitch that could easily have been mistaken for a beach. We scored within a minute of kick off when Jones read their attacking line like a book and took an interception from within our own 22. Crump, who was on excellent kicking form, slotted over the conversion. We kept the game flowing, but Dalziel’s strong pack used some well rehearsed moves to score 3 tries in succession. Before half time, further Melton tries from Woodward, Watts and Crump put us back in the lead, with Crump converting all but his own try. Dalziel started the second half well with two good solo tries, which took the score to 33-26. We realised that we needed to up a gear, and great line-out and scrum work form the tight 5 did this. After some excellent rucking and in the 6th phase of play, Jones hit a sweet gap to score his second and Crump excellently converted the difficult kick to level the scores at 33-33. However, Scottish rules state that in the event of a draw, the team who scores first are the winners, thus granting us the win. A great evening was had by all, as was in the cultural experience in Glasgow the following day. Thanks goes to all the coaches and adults who made the tour possible, and a special thanks goes to out tour guide, Grant Talbot (a.k.a Tinky Winky). We are all looking forward to next season of Colts rugby.
