Match Report

Sunday 11th March 2007

Loughborough Festival

Squad: Oscar Bacon, Connor Boylan, Charlie Bygott, Harry Cank, James Eggleston, Tom Evans, Billy-Joe Ellingworth, Alex Garton, Henry Kaczmarczy, Alex King, Cathal McNally- O’Reilly, Nicholas Price, Jake Stewart.

Game 1

Melton 40: Paviors 15

Try scorers: Henry Kaczmarczy (1) Connor Boylan (7)

Melton flew at Paviors in the first game of the tournament with James Eggelston making a break from the whistle passing to Connor Boylan to score the first of his record breaking 7 tries in this opening game. By running straight at Paviors the team opened their defensive line to exploit weaknesses. Paviors did respond but Melton defended well with Charlie Bygott making a crucial tag forcing a turnover which stopped Paviors from scoring. Paviors scored straight away at the start of the second half. Melton regrouped and started running at them again. This strategy worked and Connor and Henry Kaczmarczy scoring again. Connor Boylan played an outstanding game.

Game 2

Melton 15: Loughborough 50

Try scorers: Connor Boylan (1) Alex Garton (1) Henry Kaczmarczy (1)

Melton came up against an in-form Loughborough squad who went on to win the festival. They were quick and slippery and with Melton playing in the mud for the first half Loughborough scored again and again. Melton had some opportunities but some wild passing and a slippery ball forced knock-ons. Henry Kaczmarczy made a dash for the line but was caught before he could touch down and Alex Garton ran into touch when he did.  It was left to Connor Boylan to break the duck just before half time. The second half Melton were out of the mud and played a more organised game. Alex Garton and Henry Kaczmarczy went on to score. Alex King and Tom Evans grabbed some good tags.

Game 3

Melton 30: Kettering 25

Try scorers: Connor Boylan (3) Henry Kaczmarczy (1) Harry Cank (2)

This was a closely fought game in which our passing improved greatly. Connor Boylan intuitively picked up a miss-pass from Kettering, saw the gap and made the first try. Charlie Bygott and Connor Boylan were sharp in defence thwarting a break from Kettering with a double tag. Henry Kaczmarczy then intercepted a ball in our half and with his turbo-charged burst of speed streaked through Kettering to score. In the second half Jake Stewart made a run but was tagged on the line. Harry Cank was integral in the second half. His style of running at the opposition with determination, rather than behind our line, swivelling his body to avoid being tagged resulted in two tries.

Game 4

Melton 20: Ashby 30

Try Scorers: Charlie Bygott (2) Connor Boylan (1) Oscar Bacon (1)

This was the second place decider. Ashby were sharp from the start. Alex Garton bravely went in for a low tag and took a bang.  Harry Cank took advantage of a wild pass from Kettering after the restart Charlie Bygott ran in support and touched down the try. In the second half we defended with passion. Charlie Bygott scored again, followed by Connor Boylan (his 11th of the day). Oscar Bacon bagged another try and it was evens-stevens. But sadly, Ashby went on to score two more in quick succession.

Overall a solid third place for Melton.

Melton 25 : LFE 20

Try scorers: James Egglestone (1) Henry Kaczmarczy (1) Jake Stewart (2) Tom Evans (1)

Melton took LFE by surprise with a try in the opening seconds from a move made by Harry Cank and finished off by James Egglestone. Melton’s set piece play reaped a number of tries. Nick Price made a break with Jake Stewart picking up a scissor pass which foxed LFE , Jake ran for the gap and put down the try. Henry Kaczmarczy used his extraordinary bursts of speed to streak passed the opposition. Tom Evans was quick on the tagging and scored the last winning try in an evenly matched game.

Game 2

Melton 30 : LFE 30

Try scorers: Billy Joe Ellingworth (2) Oscar Bacon (2) Charlie Bygott (2)

In an end to end, open and fluid game, Melton passed the ball well and took advantage of the space this generated and scored. Billy Joe Ellingworth stormed through LFE to score the first try. Alex Garton and Charlie Bygott were superb in defence. Bygott made two determined runs which resulted in two tries. Oscar Bacon was sharp and spotted gaps in the defence, taking advantage of some mistakes in handling made by LFE and ran in two tries.

Melton Under 8s fielded two sides against Coalville & South Leicester.

Each team played a total of 40 minutes of rugby and were still full of running and energy.

The Melton squad have started to hold their shape as-well-as support the ball carrier. During the games they passed the ball quickly and to hand, all before the tags had been made, it was a pleasure to watch as the games progressed, the squad started putting their training into practise including scissors passing, dummy passes and angled running from deep.

The Melton squad were made very welcome by Coalville & South Leicester coaches and players alike, this added to the superb rugby on show made this one of the most enjoyable days this season.

Away to Keyworth

Squad: Connor Boylan, Charlie Bygott, Harry Cank, James Egglestone, Tom Evans, Henry Kaczmarczy, Alex King,

A mixed Keyworth Under 7s and 8s side gave a good account against Melton Under 8s. Melton were slow to kick in to gear with erratic passes and fumbled tagging. Connor Boylan scored the first try. Harry Cank made a zig-zagging run from the half way line to score. James Egglestone was tagged on the line and had a try disallowed. From the re-start, Alex King barged through to score. James Egglestone was tagged just before the try-line and passed to Tom Evans who ran around Keyworth and scored.

Half-time Keyworth 10: Melton 20

In the second half, Tom Evans was really sharp on the tagging stopping Keyworth. A lovely diagonal run by Connor Boylan with Charlie Bygott in support resulted in a try. Keyworth took the opportunity from the re-start passing to each other. Melton missed the tags and Keyworth scored again. Melton woke up and in a fluid run of play, Connor passed to Eggy who passed to Henry Kaczmarczy who streaked and side-stepped to try in the top corner. Harry Cank made the most visual try. He caught the ball, stumbled, regained his balance and left four Keyworth players in his wake to score. In the final passage of play, Tom Evans intercepted a pass and zoomed up the pitch only to be felled just before the try line. Connor picked up the ball and scored the final try of the game.

A sound win for Melton and “don’t forget the champagne!”

Triangular Tournament Oakham and Syston

Squad: Oscar Bacon, Harry Bellamy, Connor Boylan, Jamie Brown, Charlie Bygott, Harry Cank, James Egglestone, Katie Earney, Tom Evans, Billy-Joe Ellingworth, Alex Garton, Henry Kaczmarczy, Alex King, Cathal McNally-Reilly, Max Parker, Nicholas Price, Kirsty Ruddle, Jake Stewart.

Melton 35: Oakham 25

Melton made a shaky start against Oakham in the last game before Christmas with Oakham going ahead with two tries in the first minutes of the game. Melton got organised and caught up with tries from Connor Boylan and Charlie Bygott. Melton took advantage when Oakham lost their shape and ran in some more tries. Oakham answered back and at half time the scores were even. In the second half, Melton were all over Oakham, Captain Harry Cank scored and with two more streaking tries from Connor Boylan, Melton beat Oakham for the first time in three meets.

Melton B 5: Syston 25

In a physical game against Syston, Jamie Brown, Jake Stewart, Harry Bellamy and Oscar Bacon made the best of the conditions and put up a brave defence against an accomplished side. Oscar Bacon was unlucky to have his try disallowed because of frantic tagging by Syston. In the last play of the game, Jake Stewart intercepted a Syston miss-pass and broke the duck to score his first match try.

Syston A 20: Melton A: 20

In an evenly matched game, Melton passed the ball better and played a more open game. Henry Kaczmarczy streaked up the line to open the scoring with a try in the top right corner. Harry Cank and Connor Boylan followed suit and Tom Evans ran from the base line up the full length of the touchline to score his first try for Melton this season which evened up the scores.

Try Scorers:

Connor Boylan: 5 Charlie Bygott: 2 Harry Cank: 2 Jake Stewart: 1 Henry Kaczmarczy: 1 Tom Evans: 1

Game 1  Melton A 11 vs Ashby A 7

Game 2  Melton A 9 vs Ashby A 9

Game 1  Melton B 7 vs Ashby B 9

Game 2  Melton B 6 vs Ashby B 5

Melton Under 8s fielded two sides against Ashby and bagged a record breaking 33 tries in the morning. Each team played a total of 40 minutes of rugby and were still full of running. Ashby were no pushover though, they defended well and gave us a good test.

Melton has started to run forwards at the opposition. It was this, coupled with alert tagging and an improvement in holding a line both in defence and attack that showed in the impressive score sheet and range of try scorers. Billy-Joe Ellingworth and Jamie Brown scored their first tries (and not last) for Melton.

Pool Games:

Melton vs. Market Bosworth (Bye) Win

Melton 4: Loughborough 7

Melton 6: Wellingborough 2

Semi final

Melton 4: Lutterworth 7

Out of a squad of 10, 6 players made the score sheet which shows that the team is beginning to play more as a unit than a group of individuals.

A two-hour wait before the first game because our first opponent did not turn up showed in the score of the opening game against Loughborough. Melton were a little sluggish as a unit but there were some individual highlights from Henry K. and Harry Cank. We went straight in to the next Pool game and played a barnstorming performance and dominated Wellingborough. The boys were well warmed up and the confidence visibly grew. The normally quieter mid-field players, Jake Stewart, James Egglestone, Tom Evans and Alex Garton were much more positive, ran up the field of play at the opposition and were involved in the game with Alex Garton scoring the last try. There was a lovely passage of play started by Harry Cank who passed to Alex King then to Connor Boylan then to Charlie Bygott who passed to Harry Cank who made the try. Henry Kaczmarczyk was a tagging demon making 6 tags in a row.

We were the strongest opposition against the eventual tournament winners: Lutterworth but lost against them in the semi-final. Lutterworth held shape and were much sharper at tagging. In the second half Melton held the line much better and when players were tagged passed out to the wing rather than on the inside. Running at Lutterworth rather than around them resulted in 4 tries for us.

Man of the Tournament: Harry Cank

Try scorers: Henry Kaczmarczyk 4, Charlie Bygott 2, Harry Cank 4, Connor Boylan 3, Alex Garton 1, Alex King 1 (disallowed)

 Kesteven Tournament

Squad: K. Earney, H. Cank, H. Kaczmarczyk, H. Bellamy, O. Bacon, J. Egglestone, J. Stewart, C. Bygott, N. Price, A. King, C. Boylan, T. Evans.

Ilkeston 4: Melton 4

Sleaford 5: Melton 5

Newark 2: Melton 2

 Play offs:

Melton 4: Market Rasen 4 Half time, rain stopped play.

Melton Under 8s started the season impressively and were undefeated in all four games at the Kesteven festival. A batch of newcomers, Harry Bellamy, Harry Cank, Henry Kaczmarczyk and Katie Earney were undaunted by the opposition. Harry Cank showed good positional sense and started making chances and had a try disallowed in the final (one-step rule). Connor Boylan was superb in defence as were Tom Evans, Nick Price, James Egglestone and Alex King.

Speedy Henry K. made some lightening dashes on the left wing and was top scorer of the day. Charlie Bygott led the team from the first to the last blow of the whistle. Alex King and Connor Boylan all made the score sheet as well.

The squad is a much more cohesive unit and we saw some lovely instances of passing and running rugby. The team held the tournament winners- Newark to a draw.

The play-off for third place against Market Rasen was abandoned at half time when the hail arrived and everyone dashed for cover.

 Try scorers: Henry K. - 6, Charlie Bygott - 5, Connor Boylan - 4, Alex King - 1.
